What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
OCD is an anxiety disorder which uses repetitive behaviours to ease and reduce compulsive thoughts, worries and fears.
Obsessive -for people with OCD Obsessions comprise of persistent recurring thoughts. Performing tasks, rituals, or compulsion to eliminate or reduce the obsession related anxiety.
Compulsive - Compulsive rituals are preformed either because the person feels they have to or it mitigates the anxiety.
There are many different types and categories of OCD however typically a person experiences:
Checking
A person with OCD may need to constantly check which becomes a compulsion. The purpose of this is to prevent damage, fires, leaks or damage. Checking may involve turning off electrical items to prevent a fire, checking windows and alarms for security, checking symptoms of illness to prevent illness.
Checking is often carried out many times, sometimes for several hours. This impacts a person's ability to hold down a job, relationships and social life.
Contamination
One of the symptoms of OCD may also be contamination - the need to wash and clean themselves is compulsive. The underlying fear is that contamination can cause illness or even death.
The fear of contamination may include: using public toilets, shaking hands, touching door handles, eating out, hospitals, compulsive house cleaning.
Hoarding
Hoarding is also another symptom of OCD - unable to throw away or discard items which is no longer needed, worn or useless.
Repeative and intrusive thoughts.
Repeative and intrusive thoughts with OCD is a prolonged thinking about a specific question or theme, and may include religious thoughts, thoughts about themselves, the universe etc.
This list is just an example, and there are many other types of OCD.
