Some of the anxiety symptoms include:

Emotional response to anxiety - being anxious for some causes, excessive worrying, feelings or dread and an unrealistic view of the situation or the future.  It can also impact relationships as the feeling of restlessness, uneasy and Irritability develop and increase.  Work begins to suffer as it become difficult to sleep and to concentrate.

Physical response to anxiety - this can impact the body: from muscle pain and tension, headaches, sweating, feeling sick, stomach problems (pain and diarrhoea), Heart palpitations.

Generalised anxiety disorder - this is generally a long-term condition and the anxiety and worry is a constant feature in day to day living.  Feeling anxious is related to a wide range of issues and feelings rather than one specific event.  The anxiety may be irrational, disproportionate to the actual source.

Phobia - Having a fear which is disproportionate to any real danger is called a phobia.  When the phobia starts to impact daily life, it may be associated with an anxiety disorder.  Fear of spiders, enclosed spaces, heights, dogs, dentists,  needles are all common phobias.  Phobia can also impact feelings of anxiety.

Panic disorder - Panic disorder is when a person suddenly develops an intense period of fear and this develops into a panic attack.  There may be triggers for the panic attacks, or they appear with little or no warning.

Post-traumatic stress disorder - Post-traumatic stress disorder occurs if a person has witness or been involved in a traumatic event.  PTSD symptoms include anxiety, dreams, flashbacks, recurring thoughts, memories of the events.  These can occur many years after the actual event causing a lot of anxiety.

Social Anxiety/Social Phobia - For a person who experiences social anxiety, it is difficult to be in social or public situations where they fear being the centre of attention, embarrassing themselves, anxious.

What causes anxiety?

Anxiety is a reaction to fears or feelings which may be caused by a number of things, such as emotions, trauma, environment, childhood learning or something else which may be out of the conscious awareness.

Flight or flight - is part of the evolution of humans, without it our species would not have survived as this response allows a person to protect themselves.  This is actually a good thing, however the body can often misread this information and believes it is in danger when in actual reality there is no danger (just an exam, driving test, giving a presentation.  When this happens, the body prepares itself to either stay and defend (fight) or run away from the situation (flight).  The mind thinks it is protecting the person, and the body responds (with anxiety, heart beats faster, sweating etc).
