What are phobias?
A phobia is an irrational, intense and persistent fear of certain situations, events, places, animals or people. Almost everyone has an irrational fear of something, some get anxious and panic, others scream when they see a picture of a snake or mouse.
For some, the fear is so extreme, irrational, and restricting it becomes a phobia. When you have a phobia, you know that the fear is irrational however your mind and body responds to the situations which you feel can not control. For some, the phobia is so great that just by thinking of it may make them anxious and others try to avoid the situation so they do not come in to contact with the phobia.
There are four types of phobias:
Animal phobias - animal phobias are caused by a fear of an animal or insect. Common animal phobias include; spiders, dogs, birds, rodents.
Natural environment phobias - natural environment phobias include water, heights, storms, dark.
Situational phobias - Situational phobias are phobias which are triggered by specific situations such as; the dentist, lifts, enclosed spaces, flying, driving, tunnels, bridges.
Blood-injection phobias - Blood / injection phobias are phobias connected with blood, needles or other medical procedures.
There are some phobias which do not fall into any specific category such as fear of death, public speaking, social phobia, fear of cancer.
Symptoms of phobias
